“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not perish
but may have eternal life.” — John 3:16
Our first hint of incarnation comes in the creation story.
God makes stuff out of darkness:
First, there is a fire of stars, and out of stars come all the elements,
then water and dry land, jellyfish and bugs, and fungi and the flowers.
Then, dogs and cats and birds and elephants, and finally, humans.
And the Maker looks over all the stuff of creation and speaks:
It is good. It is good stuff.
God so loves the world.
God is dwelling in all the works of creation. God is in the stars, the galaxies, the planets, the rocks and soil, the trees and fields. God is in us.
We are especially mindful of this cosmic Love revealed in Jesus, born an infant, incarnation taking shape in a vulnerable form.
God so loves the world
that God said yes to earthly becoming,
God so loves the world that the invisible is made visible
God so loves the world that the divine is made accessible.
It’s a tough world sometimes but Love always has a chance here.
Incarnation is not a one-time event;
it is not something that happened long ago and in a faraway place,
Every day is a continual unfolding of Love Divine;
We are part of an ongoing love affair.
Where there is Love in the universe, there is incarnation.
How we care for one another is a practice of incarnation.
How we care for the earth is a practice of incarnation.
How we treat our body and the bodies of others is the practice of incarnation.
The journey through Scripture is, at heart, a journey into Love. The more deeply we listen, the more clearly we discover that we live, move, and have our being in a world so loved.
Becoming Love…
If incarnation is God’s love continually taking flesh, how might that love become visible through you this week—in your words, your hospitality, your work, or your care for creation?

Today, Love became visible in …
Take a slow walk outdoors or even looking out a window. Repeat quietly: “God so loves the world.”
Pause often.
Now, choose five things that catch your attention—a leaf, a bird, a weathered fence, a child laughing, a puddle reflecting the sky, an old tree, a stranger’s smile.
With each one, whisper: “Beloved.”
When you return home, write these five words or sketch the five things you noticed. Know that today Love became visible in the five things that invited your imagination.
