Daniel

“To you, O God of my ancestors,
I give thanks and praise,
for you have given me wisdom and power,
and have now revealed to me what we asked of you,
for you have revealed to us what the king ordered.”
– Daniel 2:23

It wasn’t a song in “our” hymnbook so I may have learned it at the Presbyterian Church Vacation Bible School:

“Dare to a Daniel
Dare to stand alone,
Dare to have a purpose true,
Dare to make it known.” (Philip Bliss, 1873)

I liked the tune. (Listen here.)

I liked Daniel’s spunk.

The Book of Daniel is full of adventure …
lion dens, fiery furnaces and dream interpretation.
It is also full of visions and prophecies.

But what stands out for me is that Daniel and his friends
choose the path of great resistance.
They say no to bowing down to golden idols.
They turn aside from false promises.
They take risks and face perils, remaining true to their values.

Theirs was a scary world.
And it remains so.
The path of great resistance still calls.

In our world right now, what do you name as ‘golden idols” and false promises? What is your purpose true in the midst of it?

Light a candle. Whisper your Earth questions or fears to God. Notice what rises in you.

When it is time to extinguish your candle, blow the light to a person, place or situation in the world.
