Welcome to Poetry & Prayer: Day Five

You might want to read the Introductory Post to this Prayer Bench series. Poetry and Prayer will be a continuing category at the Prayer Bench but for eight days give particular presence to the meeting of the General Council of The United Church of Canada in Corner Brook, NL.

It looks like the Commissioners work in Commons this morning and then the day leads into Sabbath/ free time and excursions to explore the host landscape and culture. Even with all the remaining work, Sabbath and adventure are important times, not of distraction but of inviting all that has been and all yet to come to be in silent conversation.

The poet Judy Brown, who grew up in Michigan on the Great Lakes,
word paints a picture of a time on the sea when the horizon disappears.
In times like this she calls for courage and trust
and offers assurance that rest –

“will bring us to another
place
where we can see
horizon, see land again,
regain our sense
of where
we are,
and where we need to swim.” – Judy Brown

Read the whole poem here.

Let us create a moment of Sabbath (even for a moment) in our heart
and let that rest bring us to whatever place in our thinking needs assurance or courage.

Let us hold in prayer the host Conference, Newfoundland/ Labrador Conference
and all who will welcome Commissioners during local excursions.

Listen to Judy Brown read “The Trough.”
