“My Eyes So Soft”

by | Feb 21, 2024 | Reflections, Pause

This is a praying with a poem post. Spend time with this poem. Read it through. Read it aloud. Notice if a word or a phrase reaches out for you, shimmers for you, resonates in your heart.

MY EYES SO SOFT
Don't
Surrender
Your loneliness so quickly.
Let it cut more
Deep.
Let it ferment and season you
As few human
Or even divine ingredients can.
Something missing in my heart tonight
Has made my eyes so soft,
My voice so
Tender,
My need of God
Absolutely
Clear.
Hafiz. (Sufi Mystic 1320-1390 A.D.)
translation by Daniel Ladinsky.
  1. After reading and contemplating the poem, consider the words or phrases that resonate in your heart. What is it about these words or images that speaks to your soul? How might they guide your spiritual practice or reflections during this season of sacred seeing?

  2. Reflect on moments when loneliness or other suffering has been a teacher, fermenting and seasoning your soul. What have you learned?

  3. Consider the lines “My need of God absolutely clear.” Reflect on your own need for the Divine. In what ways does this need influence your spiritual journey? In your moments of longing or seeking, what practice helps you with your connection with the Divine?
