“To you, O God of my ancestors,
I give thanks and praise,
for you have given me wisdom and power,
and have now revealed to me what we asked of you,
for you have revealed to us what the king ordered.” – Daniel 2:23
It wasn’t a song in “our” hymnbook so I must have learned it at the Presbyterian Vacation Bible School:
“Dare to the a Daniel
Dare to stand alone,
Dare to have a purpose true,
Dare to make it know.” (Philip Bliss, 1873)
I liked the tune. I liked Daniel’s spunk.
The Book of Daniel is full of adventure …
lion dens, fiery furnaces and dream interpretation.
It is also full of visions and prophecies.
But what stands out for me is that Daniel and his friends
choose the path of great resistance.
They say no to bowing down to golden idols.
They turn aside from false promises.
They take risks and face perils, remaining true to their values.
Theirs was a scary world.
And it remains so.
The path of great resistance still calls.
What would you name as some of our ‘golden idols” and false promises?
What is your purpose true?
love this one!
